Puzzling is a digital art project initiated in 2015 by Venetian artist Andrea Morucchio. Debuting at the 56th Venice Biennale, it was part of the MUVE Contemporaneo exhibition at Palazzo Mocenigo Museum. The installation, The Rape of Venice, featured thousands of photographic tiles randomly recombined to deconstruct the mosaic floor of St. Mark’s Basilica. Over five thousand tiles with geometric, phytomorphic, and zoomorphic motifs were printed on a walkable vinyl surface, covering the exhibition floor.
The Puzzling Classics project rearranges these tiles into mosaics that reinterpret paintings by masters Morucchio admires, focusing mainly on Italian Renaissance and Baroque painters. These reinterpretations primarily depict historical, religious, or mythological figures through portraiture.
