PUZZLING SAN MARCO | Puzzling Classics Project

Featuring

This series of works was created for an editorial project inviting contemporary artists to engage with a literary work. Andrea Morucchio was asked to respond to John Ruskin's The Stones of Venice. Morucchio visually reinterprets elements of St. Mark's Basilica, described by Ruskin, by recomposing thousands of pieces from the Basilica's mosaic flooring. In 1850, Ruskin expressed his desire to meticulously draw St. Mark's "stone after stone" to mentally recreate it, driven by his profound love for the city. He passionately studied Venice to capture the essence of its ever-pounding waves, akin to the tolling of a death bell, against the Stones of Venice.
