Gaïa, Celebrating the Creation of the Earth is a work with a long genesis, spanning over 26 years. It began in 1999 as a commissioned piece, inspired by the vision of the person who requested it. I painted from the image formed in my mind, following his description — a dreamlike young girl, lost in thought, cradling a globe in her lap.
She is surrounded by rose-tinted sunset clouds, with mountains glowing in their reflection and rivers cascading into verdant valleys. The composition is symmetrically framed by two bouquets of red and pink roses, and an arch of raw brown branches encloses the scene, evoking a subtle reference to La Belle au Bois Dormant.
The final touches include a delicate collage of lace-like elements (la dentelle), merging myth and nature, memory and vision. The work was completed in 2025, concluding a meditative creative journey that unfolded over more than two decades.
