“Maternity” forms a triangular composition featuring the primary couple of a "métisse" mother and her son, juxtaposed with a young white girl. While a black lady looks off into the distance with an indifferent yet dominant attitude, her son raises his hand, and a young lady looks at her.
Created during the artist's studies in Paris, before having children, the drawing suggests that the young girl is observing the mother-son duo, perhaps questioning motherhood. Both women have visible breasts, though without any sexual connotation. The artwork is characterized by a prevailing red-blue complementary contrast.
