Aunt Sarah is the first piece from Ugonna's Four Women series, which is a tribute to the monumental Nina Simone and her iconic song of the same name. Each piece depicts a character representing an African-American stereotype, thrust upon the women by virtue of their skin colour. Ikechi aims to simultaneously highlight and overlook their skin colour as their key physical quality, allowing them to be seen as more than just Black — they are women with varied, nuanced, long and winding histories
