Other, 34.5 × 23 cm
Jōmon urns, fired at low temperature, are the main artistic evidence in Japan between the third millennium and the third century BC. This urn, intended for domestic use, has a classic decoration of "corded" patterns made by printing. The lower part shows a regular geometric background enhanced with rounder incisions. The upper part circumscribed by two bands in slight relief is organized in stylized volutes.
Provenance: American private collection, acquired before 1945.
