“From where I see...” is a digital drawing of my studio, conceived from the precise point where my eyes are situated when I work—a queer's eye view rendered in a birds-eye perspective that, like gravity, compresses my world into a spherical form. This place in my home where I feel most at home is also a family portrait with my two fur babies—and me looking back at my world from within the real studio inside my computer screen. The video animation of the drawing captures the sense of being in flow as I work—and the self-referentiality of representing myself as an artist in my studio.
Since I made this piece in 2019, both Blinki (mainly in white) and Zumi have died, and the pandemic has transformed my space into more of a studio in the sense of television. I am a face on a zoom screen; my house is where I now perform being an artist; occasionally making art. Sometimes, a new cat breaks the spell I am casting. This new edition (2021) is the first produced in a circular format—which feels right formally and conceptually.
