Oh No You Didn’t is part of a series of works exploring the legacy of Modernist painting through a contemporary lens, in which the painterly language of gestural abstraction and the hard edge are remixed with objects and shapes that are strangely familiar from everyday visual culture as seen through a screen, such as desktop icons, video games and coloured pixels. Oh No You Didn’t depicts a moody abstract landscape where hyperreal painted metallic shapes exist alongside an intuitive smear of paint, precisely masked shapes and strong graphic symbols. It captures the energy of the nocturnal urban environment, the utopian fantasy world of science fiction and the internal space of a computer monitor in one illusionary image.
