At the heart of the Unesco World Heritage reserve is the ‘Strictly Protected Zone’. This tiny pocket is regarded as the last remaining example of untouched primeval forest that once covered the lower European plain since the last ice age. Tourists can visit the region accompanied by qualified guides and must stick to clear paths. Scientists from around the world continue to study this ecosystem, discovering new species and learning how to protect those under threat from extinction.
