This painting is about Orpheus who appears in Greek mythology.
He is a legendary musician and poet. There is a well-known story about him. His wife Eurydice fell into a nest of vipers and suffered a fatal bite on her heel.
In order to save her from death, Orpheus travelled to the 'Underworld.' His beautiful music softened the hearts of Hades (King of Underworld) and Persephone (Wife of Hades). They eventually agreed to allow Eurydice to return with Orpheus to earth on one condition:
He should walk in front of her and not look back until they both had stepped on the upper world. However, when Orpheus began to see upper world, with excitement he turned back and looked at her. At that moment Eurydice vanished and he lost her again, but now forever.
In this work, Orpheus is playing his music with deep remorse. He does not want to look back again. That is why covers his eyes with white cloth.
When I read this story, I thought about our regret and sorrow towards our past. Sometimes it is not to easy to let go of past that holds us firmly, but we all know that as one door closes another is opening.
Here, Orpheus is standing at the point where the old is gone and new dawn is beginning.
