During the 1968 Summer Olympics, when Tommie Smith and John Carlos received the gold and bronze medals, the two American athletes raised gloved fists on the podium during the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner. This took place a few months after Martin Luther King Jr. assassination, the two athletes took this moment to stand up against social injustice and promote civil and human rights.
