The algorithm operates as a kind of paint brush combined with a typewriter, printer, colorizer, magnifying glass, etching-stylus, compass, and straightedge—an exciting and dexterous new implement of image-making. But it’s also so much more than just a tool, as it has to some degree a ‘mind’ of its own capable of completely surprising you no matter how carefully one crafts the prompts and rules or seeks to control the underlying algorithm.

When creating these images, we never had the feeling of a mechanical “painting by numbers” but always as if we were collaborating with a ghost in the machine, working in concert with some mysterious intelligence on the cusp of an unforeseen breakthrough. This illusion of an artistic automaton—created as it is through a gigantic, randomized set of AI directives—sufficiently mimics the techniques of an actual artist, replete with its own stylistic and thematic tendencies of manipulation and an uncanny ability to learn from art history, that we consider our custom-tailored GAN AI a fully-fledged member of LIBESKIND ARTS.
