Created in 1984, 'Untitled (i23-3974)' was generated using AARON - Harold Cohen’s pioneering AI computer programme designed to produce work autonomously. It was drawn using Cohen's custom Drawing Machine, and belongs to a period of drawings produced between 1975 and 1985 where, inspired by the drawing development of young children, Cohen taught AARON the concept of forms. Here similar abstract shapes are repeated within the work and schematic lines imbue the drawing with energy. Applying the coloured ink later by hand, Cohen’s choice of colours contribute significantly to the composition of the work, underlining the collaborative nature of Cohen’s practice at this time.
